Study French

Our French programme is available as an ab initio programme (i.e., from scratch, or with a qualification at AS Level or below) or a post A-level programme. It can be combined with Linguistics, German, History, Italian Philosophy or Spanish. If you are plan on studying ab initio French alongside another language, you must have an A-level (or equivalent) in that second language.

What do our students have to say about the French programme?

Lucy, French and History graduate (2018)

The York French course is more focused on the culture and the language which is what I personally enjoy the most. The History department is one of the best! The academic staff between them cover an enormous expanse of history so you have loads of great and interesting options. I enjoy being able to switch between the two disciplines, it means I never get bored!

Roz, French and Spanish graduate (2020)

Everything about York university and the department was welcoming when I came to visit, I could really see myself fitting into the community here. The best thing about the course is that every single module leader will go above and beyond to help you if you need extra attention. Also, the seminar led course is a particular help as it feels much more personal than lecture based courses.
