Study Spanish

Our Spanish programme is available as an ab initio programme (i.e., from scratch, or with a qualification at AS Level or below) or a post A-level programme. It can be combined with Linguistics, French, Italian or German. If you are plan on studying ab initio Spanish alongside another language, you must have an A-level (or equivalent) in that second language.

What do our students have to say about the Spanish programme?

Tom, Spanish and Linguistics, graduate 2018

The lecturers who are not only experts in their field, but genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about what they are teaching. I feel very lucky to be in a department with such great teachers.

Roz, French and Spanish graduate (2020)

Help for ab initio students is excellent, even going into second year we are supported with extra contact hours with a tutor. You'd never think you'd be able to speak and understand Spanish as well as the post A-Level students, but I've found it's more than achievable!

Caitlin, French and Spanish, current finalist

I wanted to embrace the challenge of studying a language from scratch and I was impressed by the incredible teaching standard here at York. I also loved that from second year you join the post A-level class unlike most universities and you can all help and learn from each other. The close knit classes we have, really allowed me to build a strong network of peers and like minded language learners. I always feel encouraged and supported by staff and the current affairs based topics allow me to study what is important to me.
